On the green – Putting

watchMynumbers has set up five putting distance zones for the Professional, Elite Amateur and handicapped golfer:

  • <1 metre or Yard, or 3 Feet                                        (Putt Zone 1)
  • 1 to 2 metres or Yards, or 3 to 6 Feet                       (Putt Zone 2)
  • 2 to 5 metres or Yards, or 6 to 16 Feet                     (Putt Zone 3)
  • 5 to 8 metres or Yards, or 16 to 26 Feet                  (Putt Zone 4)
  • More than 8+ metres or Yards, or over 26+ Feet (Putt Zone 5)

When the ball is On the Green, the putting zones section records the number of putts in took to get into a closer zone, or how many putts it took to get the ball into the hole from the departure zone.

The colour shown in the On the Green section of a scorecard reflects the relative success of your putts on each hole.

The distance Putt Zones (in columns) are measured in either feet, yards or metres and can be modified and retained in your personally created Report Thresholds in Player Profile.

When your ball arrives On the Green and you begin putting, the following colours reflect the quality of the putt.

watchMynumbers recommends players aim to have as many arrivals as possible on the green in the first three Putt Zones, <1 to <5, (Inside five metres/16 feet).

This will create more birdie opportunities and minimise the number of putts required on the green.

For a scratch golfer, the Ball:

Went into hole with a single Putt from:

Outside 8 metres or Yards, or 26 feet     (Putt Zone 5) – Cyan (Bright Blue) – Exceptional Putt

5 to 8 metres or Yards, or 16 to 26 Feet (Putt Zone 4) – Cyan (Bright Blue) – Excellent Putt

2 to 5 metres or Yards, or 6 to 16 Feet   (Putt Zone 3) – Light Blue                – Very Good Putt

1 to 2 metre or Yards, or 3 to 6 Feet       (Putt Zone 2) – Light Green             – Acceptable Putt

<1 metre or Yard, or 3 Feet                       (Putt Zone 1) – Light Green             – Acceptable Putt

For a scratch golfer, the Ball:

Went into Putt Zone 1 (3 feet) from:

Outside 8 metres or Yards, or 26 feet      (Putt Zone 5) – Light Blue                – Very Good Putt

5 to 8 metres or Yards, or 16 to 26 Feet  (Putt Zone 4) – Light Green             – Acceptable Putt

2 to 5 metres or Yards, or 6 to 16 Feet    (Putt Zone 3) – Light Green             – Acceptable Putt

1 to 2 metres or Yards, or 3 to 6 Feet      (Putt Zone 2) – Light Red                 – Bad Putt

<1 metre or Yard, or 3 Feet                        (Putt Zone 1) – Light Purple            – Poor Putt

Golfers with higher handicaps (above a scratch golfer), have progressively easier acceptable putting and colour recognition levels when compared to Professional and Elite Amateurs.

There are four putting statistics for the five distance Putt Zones, once the ball is on the green including:

Arrival on Green

Number of Putts From arrival point

Number of Putt Success from each distance

Putt Success %

You should strive to arrive on the green in Putt Zones 1 to 3 (<1, <2 & <5), from the outer Approach zones, and in Putt Zones 1 to 2 (<1 & <2) from the inner Approach Zones.
